Orvieto and Bolsena Lake

The tour starts from Arezzo and lasts about 8 hours.

Orvieto amazes you before arriving there: from the distance, it appears high on its tuffaceous Rupe, like an island without sea dominating a vast plain. We take the funicular to climbe the cliff and access the lovely city centre which preserves traces of any epoch: from the ancient Etruscan and Roman civilizations to the Medieval and Renaissance period, when the town was even the residence of several Popes.

Of course the Duomo is an unmissable destination, called the Golden Lily of Cathedrals forthe mosaics that ornate its incomparable façade. The artistic jewel in the Duomo is the Chapel of San Brizio frescoed by the artist from Cortona, Luca Signorelli, representing a Universal Judgement which is one of them highest testimonials of Italian painting. From Piazza Duomo, right in front of the Cathedral, guided tours depart for “Orvieto Underground”, an extraordinary journey through time into the heart of Orvieto that sinks its rootsalongthis amazing labyrinth of grottoes.

For lunch we move to Bolsena where you may enjoy a relaxing walk among the alleys of the town centre or along the Lake shores. In the afternoon we visit the amazing hamlet of Civita Bagnoregio: a bunch of medieval houses perched on a hillock and connected to the world only by a long tiny bridge.

Another option is entering in the wonderful reality of Bomarzo, an incredible park full of “monsters”, fantastic huge sculptures dating back the 16° cent., a time in when the works of art were made not to be liked by the observers, but to astonish them: you will see…
